Jaye Tyler is an over-educated, under employed single girl in her mid twenties who feels a strong sense of ambivalence to the world around her. One day her plan to not get involved is upset when a wax lion tells her to help people. Soon other toys, trinkets and other objects are talking to her. Pretty much any inanimate object with a face will give her advice and instructions, most often they are things she doesn't want to do and at the most inconvenient of times.

Jaye's family think she's starting to lose it. Her father the doctor, her mother the author, her sister the lawyer and her brother, a theologian and atheist, all have their own ideas about what to do with her. Jaye gets support from Mahandra, her childhood friend and Eric, a man who stayed in Niagara Falls when his wife cheated on him during their honeymoon.
